| Replacement of damaged transformers | | Protest against PDD's arbitrary dictate | | Et Report JAMMU, Dec 20: There is brewing public resentment against the higher authorities of PDD for issuing the orders to subordinate offices asking them not to install new transformers in the area where the old ones have got damaged till the area does not generate the targeted revenue. According to high placed sources the order has been issued by Principal Secretary to PDD to the subordinate offices in the State not to install the new transformers in any locality till the targeted revenue is not generated from the area. Following the order the PDD has withheld the installation and replacement of transformers in those areas where the old transformers have developed a snag or burnt down due to short circuit etc, sources said, adding this has led to lot of public resentment in entire State and people are up in arms against the decision. The PDD order has also been strongly criticized by the public representatives especially those belonging to Opposition parties who accuse the Department of harassing the consumers unnecessarily. They warned the Government that in case the order was not revoked and transformers not installed in the areas where they have been damaged the people will launch a massive agitation. Sources said some opposition members have also dashed letters to Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah who is also holding the portfolio of Power Ministry opposing the decision and demanded immediate installation of transformers in those localities where they have been damaged. The decision is totally unfortunate says senior PDP leader, Abdul Rahim Rather . He said that in Kashmir Valley the people need power most in the chilly Winter and the transformers in various areas are not replaced for months together after damage. With this order now the transformers will not be replaced at all. The people are up in arms against the decision and they are left with no option but to come to streets. He said in remote areas of the Valley transformers are not replaced for months together, he added. Opposing the decision MLA Raipur Damana, Bharat Bushan alias Bodhi said that in his constituency transformers have been damaged at two places and PDD is reluctant to install the same as they have clear cut orders from higher ups not to install the transformers unless the targeted revenue is not realized from the locality. He said in his constituency the transformers have been damaged in Garota and Barn villages for last 15 days and the authorities are reluctant to install them. He warned that in case installation is delayed further the people will come to streets as it is the Department and not the consumers who are defaulters for fall in revenue generation. Peoples Conference has also opposed the decision and Party senior leader Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani also warned the agitation in case the order was not revoked immediately. He said the hapless people in the State will not be able to bear the charges of power tariff accumulated for years together which the PDD failed to collect from time to time. |
