Kamaal proposes, Wani disposes
NC of confusion

JAMMU, Dec 20: The ruling National Conference (NC), whose support-base has shrunk considerably over the period even in Kashmir valley, its core constituency, is in a complete disarray. Its leadership has lost the way and making contradictory and confusing statements. That its leadership has become so uncertain and so confused could be seen from the two developments which unfolded with a span of two days and both the developments led many political pundits to believe that NC working president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is standing on a weak wicket and that he is looking for a safe Assembly seat.
On Wednesday, Omar Abdullah's uncle and NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal confirmed in unambiguous terms that Omar Abdullah won't contest election from the Ganderbal Assembly constituency he at present represents and that he would be contesting from some other constituency. Notwithstanding the fact that Mustafa Kamaal asserted that any PDP candidate would suffer a defeat at the hands of any NC candidate in Ganderbal constituency in the 2014 Assembly elections, his statement did create an impression in all political circles that Omar Abdullah was in search of a constituency other than Ganderbal that could ensure his victory.
Within 24 hours, another senior NC leader and close associate of Omar Abdullah, Nasir Aslam Wani, provincial president of the party, contradicted Mustafa Kamaal and said the report that Omar Abdullah would contest from Sonawar constituency and not from Ganderbal was a mere "speculation". "It is mere speculation. Anyway, it is too early to decide on candidates," Nasir Aslam Wani was quoted as saying on Thursday. "Assembly elections are nearly a year away, there is no question of deciding on candidatures. As per the practice, Assembly elections are held in Jammu and Kashmir after every six years, instead of five in other states or the Lok Sabha. The last Assembly elections were held in the state in November-December 2008," he said.
The manner in which Mustafa Kamaal made the assertion that Omar Abdullah would not contest election from Ganderbal and the way Nasir Aslam Wani contradicted him clearly suggest that something is fundamentally wrong with the NC leadership. The NC leadership needs to set its house in order, failing which it would suffer the worst ever defeat in its electoral history.
