| As Radio Kashmir, Srinagar sticks to primitive equipment; transmission takes a hit | | Listeners look for other options to remain abreast with latest knowledge | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Dec 20: Despite objections and reservations by experts, authorities of Radio Kashmir, Srinagar are carrying on with the obsolete equipment thus leading to frequent disruption in the transmission at the station. This has become order of the day with nobody ready to bell the cat. Sources said some of the engineering experts in the past while voicing concern over the quality of transmission from Radio Kashmir, Srinagar asked the authorities to pull up their socks and improve the quality. This has not happened so far with the disruption in the transmission becoming routine at Radio Kashmir, Srinagar. "A top engineering officer on a visit recently was amazed to find consoles of Meltron and Keltron at Radio Kashmir, Srinagar. Meltron and Keltron have stopped production of consoles more than a decade back, but still then their equipments are being used by the Radio Kashmir, Srinagar authorities. Radio Kashmir, Srinagar is the sole radio station which is using the consoles of Meltron and Keltron these days," said sources. Sources said that since the consoles have turned old reception of the primary channel along with the two FM Radio Stations of Radio Kashmir, Srinagar is poor. They said in the present time digital consoles have become inseparable part of transmission adding that the authorities of Radio Kashmir, Srinagar are still carrying on with analog type of transmission. "The old consoles should have been replaced by digital consoles in order to have reception of highest quality without disruptions. The primary channel along with the two FM stations has poor reception due to the lack of digital console and other modern equipment. On most occasions FM stations are marred by impermanent breaks and poor sound quality," said sources. Sources said repeated reminders from experts and listeners to the Radio Kashmir, Srinagar authorities have fallen on deaf ears with no improvement taking place. They said this is the reason that 92.7 BIG FM, a private FM station is earning 15 times more revenue than the revenue generated by the primary channel of Radio Kashmir, Srinagar and its two FM stations. "Today is the time of competition and one has to produce the best in order to remain in the field. Since Radio Kashmir, Srinagar is the Government run institution one cannot expect optimum performance from it. The listeners after realizing that their pleas have fallen on deaf ears have resigned to the fact that breaks in transmission at Radio Kashmir, Srinagar are never ending feature," said sources. "The authorities of Radio Kashmir, Srinagar have kept both their eyes and ears closed while ensuring that status quo with respect to transmission is maintained. The clarion sound which used to be hallmark of Radio Kashmir Srinagar is a far cry and at the end of the day it is the listener who has to face the music," said sources. Sources said that due to no slack performance by Radio Kashmir, Srinagar authorities most of its listeners have been forced to look for other options in order to keep themselves abreast with the latest knowledge. Switching over to the programmes being broadcast from private FM station seems to be the best option available to them. |
