| Faceless Cong may be wiped out in LS polls | | Needs a leader from Jammu to counter Modi factor | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Dec20; The faceless Congress in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to face a debacle in Jammu-its support base in absence of a face, think the Congress leaders.A senior leader wishing anonymity told Early Times on Friday that to counter the Modi factor in Jammu, the party has to have a leader from Jammu who could lead from the front. "Modi is predominantly a factor in Jammu and BJP is trying to polarize the situation by playing card against Kashmiri leadership and Congress has to have a local leadership to take on BJP," said he. Congress leader admitted that Mpdi is a big factor which if not countered effectively could damage the congress in Jammu. He said that BJP is playing a polarized card and so for it has succeeded in that, only a Jammu face could save Congress from debacle. He said a low key response to BJP's projection of Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate at the initial stage has proved counterproductive for the party. He said so far, Congress leaders were trying to stress that Modi was not a big deal; the party would not fight on the Modi turf, but pursue its own agenda in Jammu, however, the things have changed a lot now and Modi wave is working beyond any doubt. The congress leader regretted that the faction ridden congress as a party was non-existent in Jammu and Kashmir and that both Ghulam Nabi Azad and Professor Saifuddin Soz have become obsolete before Modi elevation. "Only a Hindu leader from Jammu can change the political landscape which is predominantly favouring Modi in Jammu" said the senior Congress leader. He said since Jammu is the constituency of Congress party, it should have a leader from the same place perticulerly after Modi's elevation as Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP. "The party lacks a General to lead the army. The one time darling of the party in the state, Ghulam Nabi Azad, is now seen as an ineffectual, hands-off and a weak campaigner after BJP elevated Modi. Further the problems for state congress compounded by coalitional pressures and factional war within the party" said the leader. He said the battle is increasingly becoming a Modi versus a faceless Congress. Besides, he has an enthusiastic party cadre behind him while the Congress has to deal with its rank-and-file demoralization, which is likely to deepen if the party loses the forthcoming Loke Sabha polls. "The trouble is that Modi represents more than just himself. His party men in Jammu are exploiting the prevalent mood, stepping into the Congress's leadership vacuum in the region" said the leader said. |
