8 sports reporter JAMMU, Jan 5: Former football player, Vipan Gupta, who has represented the state at the national level, including prestigious Santosh Trophy, has lost her young daughter, Geetika Gupta. Talented Geetika breathed her lost after a brief illness at a Delhi hospital on January two. Her last rites performed here yesterday. The cremation was attended besides other veteran and present footballers of the state by international football player from Jammu, Arun Malhotra. The Uthala shall be performed at Shiv Mandir, Sector three, opposite Sain Food Junction, Trikuta Nagar at 5 pm tomorrow. Vipan Gupta, who also remained manager of the J&K Bank Football team, presently serves the Bank at a senior position of AGM. Shaheed Bhagat Sub-junior hockey final today 8 sports reporter JAMMU, Jan 5: The final of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sub-Junior Hockey Tournament, oragnised by Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Foundation, shall take place at K K Hakhu Stadium, here at 11.30 am tomorrow. In the final, Sittu Club shall take on Young Star Club. Earlier, 10 sub-junior teams of the clubs and other institutions took part in this knock-out competition. In the title clash, Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Rajesh Kumar has consented to be the chief guest.

Mussa, Young Star, Jammu United win ties 8 sports reporter JAMMU, Jan 5: Sailing on superb performance from Vivek Dogra, Mussa Club today registered a fine 4-1 win against Shaheen XI to advance into the next round of the 8th Christmas Gold Cup Football Tournament underway at GGM Science College ground, here. Vivek struck thrice but missed the hat trick thereby guided his side to a big win. Vivek netted the ball in the fifth, 17th and 33rd minute of the match. Another goal came through Shivam in the 30th minute. From Shaheen XI, Alfred reduced the margin scoring first goal of the match in very fourth minute. Meanwhile, other three scheduled matches of the day decided only via tie-breaker and sudden death. In one such match, Young Star beat Chmrat Football Club 5-3 in tie-breaker. Earlier, in the stipulated time the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Runvijay Singh (28th) and Shriq Iqbal (39th) were the scorers from winning side while Ayush (18th) and Pankaj (41st) brought in the equalizes. The match played between District Football Association (DFA) Udhampur and Heros Club decided in sudden death with former making it a 8-7 win. In the given time, Harnam Singh (11th) and Balveer (30th) were the scorers from Udhampur while Ridham (25th) and Akshat (29th) scored for Heros Club. Jammu United once again won their game in sudden death making it 6-5 in their favour after the match against Churchill Brothers could not be decided in tie-breaker (5-5) too. Earlier, in the match time the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Vinay helped Churchill Brothers take early lead netting the ball in very fourth minute of the match. Sumit bags Jammu Division chess title 8 sports reporter JAMMU, Jan 5: State top seed, Sumit Grover secured highest 4.5 points out of five games to clinch the title trophy in the Jammu Division Senior Chess Tournament, organised by All J&K Chess Association at Hotel Nek, here today. On the top board, the game between Sumit Grover and young Meenal Gupta ended in a draw resulting into Sumit obtained 4.5 points. Meenal remained second with four points in her account. Pranav Sharma bagged the third place after he defeated Ravi Sharma of Kathua. Maxim Singh, a staffer of University of Jammu, outplayed Rohit Bhardwaj of Udhampur to remain fourth. Arvindu, Soham Kamotra and Rohit Bhardwaj finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively. The winners of the event were given away the prizes jointly by Atul Kumar, Baldev Raj, Rakesh Gupta, Taranveer Singh Gujral and Rakesh Sadhotra. Anil Kotwal was the chief arbiter for the competition. Meanwhile, as per the Association, those top seven players shall represent Jammu Province in the State level competition to be held next month.
Colts, Saints use late heroics to advance 8 agencies Indianapolis, Jan 5: The Indianapolis Colts engineered the second-largest comeback in NFL playoff history by storming back from a massive 28-point deficit to stun Kansas City 45-44 in the opening game of wild card weekend. Quarterback Andrew Luck led the fightback by engineering five second-half touchdown drives, capping the comeback with a 64-yard pass to T.Y. Hilton for the go-ahead score with 4:21 left on the clock Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. "We never panicked," said Luck. "We feel like we are in every game. The guys stuck with me and we pulled this one out." In the other wild card contest Saturday, the New Orleans Saints booted a 32-yard field goal as time ran out to edge the Philadelphia Eagles 26-24. The Colts stumbled out the gate as Luck threw three interceptions that allowed the Chiefs to take a 38-10 lead. JCC lifts Aapsi Bhaichara Cricket Tournament
8 sports reporter Jammu, Jan 5: Jagatpur Cricket Club (JCC) has lifted the Nav Varsh Aapsi Bhaichara Cricket Tournament by defeating Tara Nagar Cricket Club (TNCC), in the finals played today at Hockey Jadugar Dhyan Chand Play Filed Chack Gotta, Kathua. In a closely fought contest, the JCC romped home with three wickets to spare. The winning team overhauled the target of 117 runs after losing seven wickets. Earlier, the JCC after winning the toss asked TNCC to bat first and their innings folded at 116 runs in just 13.3 overs. The tournament was commenced on December 28 in which seven teams participated. Social Activist, Pittmaber Dutt was chief guest on occasion of final match, while the tournament was organized by Shiv Nandan.

Earlier, KCC Jammu won the toss and decided to bat first. The whole side bowled out for 90 runs in 17 overs with most of the batsmen failing to touch the double figure mark. Chess: Sahaj Grover maintains joint lead 8 agencies Gurgaon, Jan 5: Grandmaster Sahaj Grover maintained his joint lead after splitting the point with Russian GM Alexander Evdokimov in the sixth round of the second Gurgaon International Grandmasters chess tournament, here on Sunday. Playing safe with dark pieces in Grunfeld defence game, Sahaj agreed to split the point with Evdokimov after 17 moves, consolidating his lead by 5.5 points in the Rs 10,11,000 prize money event. In the other game, Ukranian Grandmaster Kravtsiv Martyn and second seed Oliver Barbosa also signed the peace treaty after 17 moves. A pack of 11 players, including Grandmasters John Paul Gomes of Philippines, Tornike Sanikidze of Georgia and Raset Ziatdinov of USA, shared the joint second spot with five points. Gomez beat Indian IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni while Sanikidze and Ziatdinov got the better of CRG Krishna and Tillayaev Ulugbek of Uzbekistan respectively in the sixth round.
