| Ministers, officials show little regard for SC directions; continue to flash Red Beacon | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 5: Despite of the ruling of the Supreme court of India, many of the officers and Ministers of the state government have not been able to give up their obsession with Red Beacon from their vehicle. Many of the Cabinet Ministers, civil and Police officials and Army officials in the state are shamelessly using the Red Beacon on their vehicles and Traffic Police does nothing except watch them passing by in utter helplessness. Minister for Horticulture, Housing and Culture, Raman Bhalla among many Minister and politicians is still using Red Beacon on his vehicles. It is pertinent to mention that after the ruling of the Supreme court, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had welcomed the ruling and removed the Red beacon from his vehicle, but some of his ministers, officials and Army officials continue to be obsessed with Red Beacon. On December 11, 2013, the Supreme Court in its order said Red beacons could be used only on vehicles of high constitutional dignitaries. Both the central and state governments will within three months issue a pruned list of constitutional functionaries entitled for red beacon lights on official vehicles. The court added that any violations of its direction would attract exemplary penalty. The court ordered that the police will implement the provisions of Motor Vehicle Act without fear or favour. The SC had earlier said that the use of beacons and sirens was a "reflection of British Raj". Following a Supreme Court ruling, in the month of December the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a massive crackdown against the usage of red beacon on vehicles. But it seems like an announcement only, no vehicle with Red Beacon was stopped by the Police or fined for using Red Beacon. J&K Police claims that they have taken a lead by removing red beacons from their official vehicles after DGP Ashok Prasad took the first step himself, followed by his Additional DGPs and others. But the police seem to have failed to garner courage to ask the ministers and politicians to remove the beacon from their vehicles. As per the order, the red beacons can only be used on the vehicles by the Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Justice and Judges of High Court, Chairman and Speaker. |
