| Population, area of Jammu 'more' as compared to Kashmir | | New administrative units | | Rustam
JAMMU, Jan 19: It is not only the ruling National Conference and the Congress which have been working in unison to harm the under developed Jammu by not creating sufficient administrative units needed to cater to its people and giving a preferential treatment to the already overdeveloped Kashmir. Certain Kashmir-based elements in and out of the administration too have been busy in spreading misinformation with a view to create an impression in the Valley that the Mustaq Ganai report on new administrative units is rational, balanced and does justice to all the three regions of the state. The Ganai report, which is being roundly condemned in Jammu by the suffering people, recommended 10 more Sub-Divisions for Jammu, 12 for Kashmir and one for Ladakh. Besides, it has recommended 28 more Tehsils for Jammu, 25 for Kashmir and four for Ladakh. It has, in addition, recommended 853 more Patwar Halqas for Jammu and 860 for Kashmir and 40 more Nayabats for Jammu, 34 for Kashmir and five for Ladakh. As for CD-Blocks, the report has recommended 29 CD-Blocks forJammu region, 31 for Kashmir and three for Ladakh". As of now, Kashmir Division, including the far off Ladakh, has 45 Tehsils and Jammu 37. Kashmir, including Ladakh, has 77 CD-Blocks and Jammu 66. There are 131 Nayabats in Kashmir, as against 126 in Jammu. There are 340 Patwar Halqas in Jammu and an equal number in Kashmir. As for Ladakh, it has eight Patwar Halqas. The biased elements in Kashmir who are supporting the Ganai report are advancing the argument that the population of Kashmir is 70 lakh and that of Jammu 53 lakh and Ladakh 2.80 lakh. Neither the people of Jammu province nor the people of Ladakh appreciate these figures of 2011 census. They say that "all these figures are fudged" and that "the census report was prepared in a room". They also say that the "population of Jammu province as more as compared to Kashmir and this is clear from the number of households and power connections in Jammu province". "Hold a fair census in Jammu province and you will see that the population of Jammu province is more," they say. They also say that the "land area of Jammu province is double that of Kashmir" and that "bulk off area is not just under developed but also difficult, treacherous and inaccessible". Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, who heads the Cabinet Sub-Committee on new administrative units, and PHE Minister Sham Lal Sharma and Urban Development Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora, members of the CSC, who belong to the Congress party, would do well to put their foot down and ensure that people of Jammu province and Ladakh region got what they legitimately deserve. Jammu and Ladakh have already suffered immense damage and loss. They are now not in a position to suffer more discrimination. And, hence, the need to dispense justice to these neglected regions, but not at the cost of Kashmir. Let Kashmir get what it deserves but also make sure that Jammu and Ladakh are not left high and dry as happened during the past more than 67 years. |
