| Kashmir polity decaying thick and fast | | Turncoats on prowl, no space for virtuous | | Bashir Assad
Jammu, Jan 19: As most of the intelligentsia and virtuous people in Jammu and Kashmir, since last two decades, stayed away from politics conspicuously , political turncoats and criminals of all sorts have invaded the political arena.
As the elections to the State Assembly draw close, political turncoats have started shifting their loyalties and this time around about a hundred of political defaulters including some high profile bureaucrats have either changed loyalties or have joined the political parties as according to political commentators of Kashmir, politics is the only profitable profession of the contemporary times.
The trend of changing colours and joining politics by some people at the fag ends of their lives has of course changed the dynamics of politics in Kashmir. Though on one hand the political leaders of all the parties pledge to involve youth in political decision making internally and part of governance when in power, the fact remains that there is hardly any space for youngsters in these political parties.
At present six former bureaucrats including three former Chief Secretaries represent all the three major political parties in the legislative council. Interestingly, over last six or seven months, more than a dozen former bureaucrats have joined the political parties in Kashmir valley. So much so broadcasters from Radio Kashmir have found heaven in political parties.
Apart from these bureaucrats, hundreds of habitual defaulters have crossed the fence from one extreme to another and biggest tragedy is that politically bankrupt Congress party in Kashmir have opened flood gate for this kind of people. Almost every day all sort of mainstream political leaders and workers change their heart and venture into greener pastures of politics not to serve the people and the state but to fulfill their urge for power. Every political party, irrespective of their political ideology blatantly encourages this shameful process of shifting loyalties. No political outfit in this politically sensitive state can claim of being a holy cow as every party resort to both overt and covert maneuvering to encourage defection and make addition to their ranks. Beyond turncoats a section of exploiters after having most out of their exploitative innings take refuge in political parties.
In Kashmir where much of the politics at one point of time was social work invigorated with values and virtues, the politics (in both mainstream as well as separatist camps) of the contemporary times is full of dirt and dust. And honestly you end up being governed by inferiors.
Particularly after 1975, the virtuous and honest people refused to join politics with the result the affairs of the state are run by goons and ghosts who have no respect for humans and humanly values. Political corruption, nepotism and constituency specific politics is now order of our political arrangement. And for last two decades fear-psychosis and willful abstention by saner elements have turned Kashmir politics an unacceptable career for upright people. As rightly said by someone politics here is open to only worthless and vulnerable to invasion by devious elements. Over the period of six decades from leadership oriented social work politics has stooped to the level of perfidy. In this situation of opportunism survival of honest and upright people in political field is practically impossible. |
