Tara commends CSC recommendations, Vakil says review report
Administrative units divide Congress
2/6/2014 11:11:00 PM
Rustam
Jammu, Feb 6: The report of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on new administrative units has not only provoked protests in Kashmir as well as Jammu, but has also divided the senior Congress leadership. Senior Congress leader and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, who headed the CSC, has been, like Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, commending the report on new administrative units and describing the decision on it historic and based on justice to all the three regions of the state, another senior Congress leader and former Cabinet Minister and close associate of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Abdul Gani Vakil, has expressed his unhappiness over the recommendations and demanded a review of the report. Tara Chand also belongs to the Azad camp.
Tara Chand and Abdul Gani Vakil spoke differently on the report on Wednesday. Abdul Gani Vakil did describe the creation of administrative units as a "welcome step and a historical move", but said that the manner and criteria adopted for the purpose was "questionable". "Some units are created for no reason, which has dented the credibility of the Government as there was neither a demand nor a justified reason for the same. A good number of the proposed administrative units are only a burden on the State exchequer and cannot be termed as a welfare measure. Creations (of new administrative units) were undoubtedly needed but in a precise and explicit manner that could have prevented the unnecessary burden on the State exchequer and preserved the sanctity of the creations. Where only one tehsil or a block was needed, multiple units have been created and in some cases even distance is less than two kilometers which is beyond prudence. The CSC deserves appreciation for hard work and dedication but the report needs a review," he said while addressing INTUC workers meeting at Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, which was organized by INTUC leader Jugal Kishore Sharma.
On the other hand, Tara Chand reiterated that the exercise undertaken by the CSC was comprehensive and inclusive. "The CSC for administrative units examined in detail all the demands presented by different people from all across the state and a detailed report was submitted. The report was accepted by the Cabinet thus paving way for taking the Government further closer to the people", he said while addressing the gathering at his official residence in Jammu.
A comparison between the statements made by Tara Chand and Abdul Gani Vakil on Wednesday should leave none in any doubt that all in the Congress are not one as far as their attitude to the CSC recommendations is concerned. The Congress leadership needs to put its house in order before making statements on the CSC recommendations and other issues.
