| One year on, Govt fails to implement DA in favour of labour class | | Minimum wages in J&K lowest | | Arun Singh
Jammu, Feb 7: Seriousness of the Government towards labour class can be gauged from the fact that more than one year has passed till the last revision of minimum wage by the State Government but till date it has failed to implement Dearness Allowance (DA) in favor of daily wage workers. Moreover, Jammu and Kashmir has earned the dubious distinction wherein daily wagers have been getting lowest wage to the tune of Rs 150 as compared to its neighboring state where minimum wage is more than Rs 200 along with DA. Sources told Early Times that the last meeting for the revision of minimum wage was held on December 31, 2012 under the chairmanship of the then minister concerned and later it was decided that the DA into the wages of labour class of various categories will be implemented within 2-3 months of the revision date. "It has been more than one year since the decision was taken, but till date it has not been implement on the ground and state Government is deliberately delaying the implementation only to appease employers," they alleged. They further informed that despite repeated humiliation faced by state government at National Labour Conference at New Delhi many a times for its utter failure to grant DA to this marginalized class which has been fighting for their sustenance with the increase of inflation with each passing day. Sources further said that Minister had convened another meeting on October 17, 2013 to discuss implementation of DA and asked the Labour Commissioner to constitute Sub Committee to look into the matter and directed to submit the report within one month but no such Sub Committee was constituted. "A labourer working in various private establishments is getting Rs 150 of minimum wage since the last revision but since then the increase in the inflation from Jan 2012-Dec 2012 has been assessed to the tune of Rs 9 per day and Rs 10 from Jan 2013-Dec 2013 as a result of which the wage of Rs 150 has been devalued to Rs 120," they said. |
