JAMMU, Feb 13: On February 11, Army Chief General Bikram Singh deflated the claims of the Congress-led UPA Government that illegal migration from Bangladesh has declined in recent years and said the illegal immigration from the neighbouring country poses a threat to national security. He reportedly debunked the claims of the UPA Government during a seminar organized by a security think tank.
Speaking at a seminar in New Delhi, he reportedly said that the "problem of illegal migration in Bangladesh has led to demographic changes in the northeast" and asserted that "illegal migration has also led to serious internal security challenges in Assam". "The forces had received a lot of help from the current political system in Bangladesh but responsibility needed to be fixed on illegal migration," he was also quoted as saying. General Singh also used the opportunity to lambaste Pakistan and reportedly said that Pakistan is keeping the western border on fire. "Pakistan is keeping the western border on fire by indulging in record ceasefire violations last year. I don't want to sound jingoistic...But we have given Pakistan a bloody nose," Singh was quoted as saying. Besides, he, as per reports, also raised issue of terrorists from the Kashmir Valley returning back to the Valley through Nepal under the Jammu & Kashmir Government's rehabilitation policy and said "many of them are suspected to indulge in forming sleeper cells for terror outfits". What General Singh reportedly said about the illegal immigration from Bangladesh, about the Pakistani mischief and about the NC-Congress's rehabilitation policy clearly suggested that the Army and the UPA Government are not on the same page and that the policies of the UPA Government and Jammu & Kashmir Government needed a review taking into consideration the long term interests of the country. It also suggested that the Army is functioning in a political environment that doesn't help defend and promote further our geo-political interests in the region and eliminate the scourge of terrorism in the Kashmir Valley. Indeed, he made some valid points.
