| Police, security forces kill 2 HM militants at Pinjoora-Shopian | | Third militant manages to flee: Reports | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Feb 13: Continuing their operations against militants', police and security forces killed two militants in the Pinjoora village of South Kashmir's Shopian district. The militants owed allegiance to the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen. Reports reaching here said that police and personnel of 44 Battalion Rashtriya Rifles cordoned off and laid a siege around the Gagloora locality of Pinjoora village this afternoon. The cordon and search operation was carried out after the police and security forces received inputs about the presence of some militants in the village.
As the advancing party started to carry out the search operations in the village, the militants reportedly holed up in a residential house belonging to Mukhtar Ahmed Malik, opened volley of gunfire upon them to break the cordon. The fire was returned and this led to fierce gunfight between the two sides.
Reports said that in the exchange of fire that continued for over three hours, two militants were killed. There are reports the third militant managed to escape from the site of the encounter. The slain militants were identified as Shabir Ahmad Gujjar alias Barkat of Bagla-Rajouri and Irshad Ahmad of Zainpora, Shopian. The militant who managed to escape is Waseem Ahmad of Pehlipora.
A defence spokesman said that based on intelligence inputs from Jammu & Kashmir Police regarding presence of militants hiding in village Pinjoora of Shopian District, joint operation was launched by troops of an RR BN and SOG Shopian which resulted in elimination of two hard core HM militants while one was still trapped.
"At 1330 hrs, intelligence input was received regarding three militants hiding in a shed near Dralbagh orchard of village Pinjoora which is approximately 3 KM North East of Shopian District. Immediately troops of RR BN and personnel of SOG, Shopian jointly launched an operation and cordoned off the area," said the spokesman.
The spokesman said that troops came under heavy volume of fire from militants adding that during the ensuing fire fight, two militants were gunned down. He said the militants are from HM group and have been identified as Arshad Ahmad alias Ashraf and Shabir Gujjar. These militants have been actively operating in the area since last more than two years. As per the last reports, operation continued as there has been intermittent exchange of fire between the troops and the trapped militant.
A police spokesman said that acting on specific information, a joint operation was launched by Police, 44-RR and CRPF at Gagloora, Pinjoora in Shopian District. The joint party was fired upon by hiding militants. In the exchange of fire two militants have got killed. The identity of killed militants is being ascertained," said the spokesman. |
