| IJM rescues 86 bonded labourers including children | | | Arun Trisal Kathua, Feb 13: A Non-Government Organization, International Justice Mission has conducted a raid along with district administration at Jai Ma Brick Kiln and rescued 86 persons including children, women and middle-aged men from alleged bonded labour on Wednesday in Hirangar. Acting on a tip-off from Hirangar Police, activists of International Justice Mission and officials of administrations of district Kathua and Hiranagar raided the Jai ma Brick Kiln of Hiranagar Tehsil and rescued the 86 persons who were trapped as labour. "We receivedreliable sources about the extreme exploitation and anti human activities at the said brick told by a team leader of the International Justice Mission Mathew and George. It was there a culture of physical and verbal abuse flourished by the owner of the Brick Kiln and forced the laobour to work for more hours at very less wages. Spokesperson of the International Justice Mission told that a lady who was forced by the owner to engage in work at kiln just two days after her pregnancy delivery. And the rate at which the labour was deployed is also a shocking which is just @500 per family per week. And it is the case of a sheer violation of wages Act and human rights. He said that total 100 persons were recorded as bounded labour who all belongs to Chatisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and other parts of the county but out of this huge figure 86 are rescued and 14 are still found missing. And these persons were forcibly engaged as bonded labour for the last more than 10 to 20 years with facing severe mental and physically torture. Whenever, the bonded labour wanted to leave the work and go to their native places, the owner didn't allow them and started to assault upon them. Our work started at 8am and went on till 8pm. We were the only workers in the entire kiln and although we were severely physically abused, verbal abuses and threats were part of our daily routine,"labour said.
