| Sessions Court awards punishment to 3 Charas smugglers | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Feb 15 : Principal and Sessions Judge Srinagar today sentenced three persons, convicted last month after 31 kilograms of Charas was recovered from their possession by police in Srinagar in 2008. The Judge, Mohammad Shafi Khan, had convicted the trio, observing that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt the guilt against them in so far as commission of offence under NDPS Act was concerned. Those convicted include Feroz Ahmad Lone son of Abdul Hamid of Wazir Bagh, Mohammad Shakoor Khatana son of Mohammad Hassan Khatana of Rajouri and Mohammad Ayoub Wani son of Mohammad Sultan Wani of Wangipora Sumbal. Pronouncing its verdict on quantum of punishment, the court sentenced Feroz for a period already undergone by him since his arrest on 22 February 2008. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on him which in default of payment, he has been directed to undergo simple imprisonment of one month. The court also sentenced Mohammad Shakoor and Mohammad Ayoub to undergo rigorous imprisonment of two years and imposed Rs 20000 each on them. "The period already undergone shall be set off from the period of sentence. In default of fine, they shall further undergo a simple imprisonment of three months." As per police on 22 February 2008, it laid a Naka at Pantha Chowk Srinagar to foil attempt to smuggle charus outside the state. Subsequently, police intercepted a vehicle (MH02N-7852) which was driven by Feroz. The vehicle was taken to CIK office Batamaloo here and on his identification, two other persons, Mohammad Shakoor Khatana and Mohammad Ayoub Wani were also arrested. Later told the police about the location were the Charas was concealed inside the body of the vehicle which was later recovered, weighing about 31 kilograms. |
