Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 15: It has been reliably learnt that the former Minister of State for Health, Shabir Khan was given shelter by a sitting Member of Parliament (MP) and ex DIG of Jammu police during the days when hunt was on for him.
Khan went underground, after Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly gave nod to police to arrest him. Khan was coming to Jammu from his constituency at Rajouri when he came to know that he would be arrested as FIR stood registered against him on the allegation of molestation by a lady doctor at Shaheed Gunj police station.
Highly placed sources giving information said that, Khan put off his official vehicle right after reaching at Akhnoor and hired some private one.
From there he landed at the residence of ex DIG of Jammu and Kashmir police. When Srinagar police reached at Gandhi Nagar police station and started conducting raids to arrest him, he fled to the residence of a sitting MP till he managed interim bail.
However, while granting interim bail to petitioner, Justice Janak Raj Kotwal observed that petition shall make himself available for investigation/interrogation before the Investigating Officer at the concerned police station by Tuesday evening and if the investigating officer arrest the petitioner, in that case he shall be released on his personal bond along with a surety in the amount of Rs 25000/- each with the condition that the petitioner in that case shall not leave the territorial jurisdiction of District Srinagar with permission of the IUO of the case and shall not in any case leave the territorial jurisdiction of the state of J&K till disposal of the application, court observed.
Later, a day after he was asked by JK High Court to appear before police, former Health minister Shabir Ahmad Khan, who had been evading arrest in a sexual assault case, came out of hiding claiming innocence and said the charge was aimed at spoiling his political career.
"These allegations are false and aimed at spoiling my political image and career. I am innocent...101 per cent innocent," the Congress legislator, who had to quit from the Omar Abdullah government in the wake of the allegations said.
The former minister expressed hope of getting justice from the court, saying he will cooperate with the police.
"I am here to give my statement to the investigating team on the directions of the court. I will fully cooperate with them. I am hopeful of getting justice from the court," he said.
Asked as to why he went into a "hiding" after submitting his resignation last week, Khan, against whom an arrest warrant was issued on Monday, said he was not hiding and as a citizen had the right to approach courts.
"I was in touch with the media. I have been talking to some media persons and have also issued a statement. As a citizen I have a right to go to court to prove my innocence. And God willing, I will be proved innocent," he said.
Khan said he resigned from the Council of Ministers on the party's advice" and to enable a "free and fair probe" into the matter.
Complying court's order he flew to Srinagar from Jammu airport to cooperative with the police.
