Early Times Report

Rajouri, Feb 15: People's Democratic Party (PDP) workers today burnt the effigy of the state government at Rajouri for its failure to address the issues of agriculture and horticulture sectors.
According to press release, party workers were gathered under leadership Shahzad Khan at Rajouri town and shouted slogans against state government.
Addressing party workers, Shahzad said that the government talks of equal development of all the regions of the state but nowhere it is to be found. He said that agriculture is the mainstay of rural economy but in our state it is given minimum emphasis.
He said that the government is not doing enough to improve the condition of farmers as well as that of agricultural products.
Talking of the state of affairs in Rajouri he said that Rajouri gets only Rs 2.93 lakhs under District Plan for soil conservation and Rs90000 for irrigation pump sets. He said that Rajouri produces the highest quantity of maize in the state but there are no incentives and programmes to improvise the production further. "What has the government laid down in the budget for the farmers engaged in agriculture and horticulture," he enquired.
Shahzad said that the climatic condition in Pir Panjal range is beneficial for Apiculture as this range has varied flora type ranging from warmer Sunderbani to cooler Dehra ki Gali.
But only Sunderbani is being developed for apiculture wherein Rs1.15 lakh is provided under District plan. Even under National Vegetable Initiative for Urban Clusters (NVIUC), only Sunderbani has been identified while rest of the district has been left out.
The provision of machinery and spare parts including spray pumps, tractors, ploughs, etc to farmers under Macro Management Sponsor Scheme has been stopped by the government. Many chemicals including Celphos and other fungicides have been made payable which otherwise was free, said Shahzad.
He further said that it is without considering the importance of agricultural land, 60 kanal lands has been allocated for the construction of the present District Hospital while a large chunk of fertile land near the Alpha Gate has been allotted for raising the Subzi Mandi.
Shahzad has urged the government to take strong step to stop using agricultural land for any purpose other than agriculture.
"Like in Punjab the government has banned the use of agricultural land for non agricultural purposes, we also need to stop its abuse by law," he said.
