| Work on Zazna fruit Mandi abandoned | | Khurhama people aghast, seek fulfillment of promises | | ET Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 19: The construction of fruit Mandi at Zazna Ganderbal has been abandoned. The construction started in 2005 during the PDP_Congress rule. According to sources, 65 kanals of land were donated by the people of the village for the construction of the proposed Mandi. The foundation stone was laid by the then PDP-Congress coalition and after the construction of a small shed the work has been abandoned. The residents approached the government several times but all in vain. A protest was also held at Press Enclave here. They said the government was not willing to give credit to the PDP.A local said the Horticulture Planning and Marketing wing on whose name the land was transferred is silent and there is brewing resentment among the masses for abandoning the work on the Mandi. The people of the area had pinned high hopes after the Government announced the construction of Mandi that it will relieve the fruit growers and vegetable growers of the area of various problems but all their hopes dashed to ground, added Mr Parra. Meanwhile the residents of Kruhama Ganderbal today warned the Central University authorities that they will not allow any construction on the 1500 kanals of land donated by them for the construction of University complex in the area till promises made with them are fulfilled in letter and spirit. Ghulam Ahmed Mir a local leader of the area said that people willingly donated 1500 kanals of fertile land to the CU on the assurance of Chief Minister that one job will be provided to each family among all 300 families who have given land to the University but to no avail. There is a lot of unrest among the people in the area as this land was a source of income for them, he said adding after taking over the land the Government was backtracking from the promise and people have decided not to allow the construction on the land till the promise is kept, he added. He said previously when the people launched agitation with the demand Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah who represents the Ganderbal Assembly segment assured them that CU can't provide the jobs to the youth but the State Government will absorb them against various posts. But this promise was not also kept, he added. Meanwhile Peoples Welfare Society Ganderbal patron and Peoples' Conference leader Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani has sought immediate intervention of the Government in settling the demands. He said failure to Government in fulfilling the promises made with the people is an indication that it is not interested in people's welfare. He said people will launch a mass movement in case the demands of Khurhama and other areas were not fulfilled soon. He also demanded R&B Sub Division should be shifted to Barsoo a Central place instead of Lar. |
