| University of Kashmir follows foot-steps of State Govt by appointing number of retired officials | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Feb 19: Following the foot-steps of coalition government in the state higher ups of University of Kashmir have re-employed retired officials over the past so many years. The varsity has turned out to be perfect rehabilitation centre for the retired officials. Sources told Early Times that the Health Centre of the University has broken all the records of re-employment since two doctors are being re-employed for the last three consecutive years due to their political affiliation. Dr. Safoora Abdullah and Dr. Altaf Rashid Kamili retired three years back but were re-employed within no time. This is despite the fact that hundreds of doctors are waiting for a job after getting their degrees. "In 2012 posts of two medical officers were advertised at the Health Centre in University of Kashmir. Scores of applied doctors applied for the posts but they got dejected when two retired officials were appointed. The bug of reemployment has reached the University of Kashmir as well and how can unemployed professionals get a job in this scenario," said the sources. Sources said that re-employment is not limited to the health centre only with this process getting a boost at the other departments and centres. Numbers of retired university professors have been re-employed in various departments at the university and this has blocked the entry of aspiring academicians. "At the Centre for Research and Development (CORD) one professor was re-employed twice with dozens of doctorate candidates being denied the opportunity to enter the department. Two professors and one associate professor were given extension in the chemistry department with dozens of PhD holders sitting idle while waiting for the job," said the sources. The sources said that last year one professor was given extension in the Zoology department thus blocking the entry of young scientists in this department as well. The re-employment of the retired professors has not gone well with the young scientists and likely academicians who term the same as an infringement on their rights. "There are over 200 PhD holders in the valley in all the available streams. The re-employment system is harming the interests who are vying for the post of Assistant Professors and promotion of Assistant Professors to Associate Professors. Hundreds of teaching positions are lying vacant in the different departments and these can be filled from the young lot available. But Alas! There is no entry for young ones since retired ones are being re-employed," said the sources. Sources said the university higher ups are carrying forward the system of contractualism without going for the meaningful productive employment at the university campus. They said the unemployment can be tackled to a great extent if the university appoints people on full time basis and not on contractual basis. |
