| Infighting ahead of polls 2014 within party turning Congress' Achilles Heel | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA
JAMMU, Feb 20 : The infighting in Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) touched a new low in Rajouri today where rival factions organized two parallel functions to welcome the arrival of All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Incharge J&K Affairs Mainul Haque to the district headquarter. While the faction led by senior Congress leader Tasaduq Hussain and Iqbal Mallik organized a programme at Dak Bungalow Rajouri, the other faction led by newly appointed PCC General Secretary Sain Abdul Rashid had organized a function at the Gujjar Hall in the town. Sources informed Early Times that as soon as AICC Secretary Haque along with senior state Congress leaders MLC Ravinder Sharma, Thakur Singh and others arrived at Dak Bungalow, the supporters of both the groups led by their respective leaders insisted on that the Congress leader from Delhi should first attend their functions. "Supporters of Sain Rashid who were standing near the Dak Bungalow gate stopped the vehicle of Haque and persuaded him to head towards Gujjar Hall where a programme was organized in his honour," said sources."The supporters of rival factions even resorted to sloganeering against each other… The situation was getting tense and an apprehension of a clash was almost certain as the tempers were running high… Both the groups were adamant on Haque turning up at their respective venues first," sources added. The sources further said, however, Haque and other Congress leaders came to know that the gathering is more in Dak Bungalow in comparison to Gujjar Hall programme so he deputed Ravinder Sharma and Thakur Hari Singh to visit Gujjar Hall to cross check the claims of the two groups on the number of people attending the functions. "After Ravinder Sharma and Thakur Hari Singh informed Haque that the Gujjar Hall has the capacity to accommodate about 100 persons only while as many as 1000 people had gathered at Dak Bungalow, the senior Congress leader from Delhi reprimanded Sain Rashid for arranging a parallel function," said sources. "Haque even scolded Sain Rashid for bringing a bad repute to the party for not able to muster a sizeable crowd even if he wished to organizes programme," sources added. |
