Centre to seek financial package proposal for refugees
2/20/2014 11:20:35 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 20: The Centre has asked the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to send proposal of financial package for refugees at the earliest. The Centre has asked the State Government to take issue as a priority and submit it at the earliest.
"The Centre is going to shoot a letter in this regard to the State Government very soon. Centre is going to ask the State Government to send the proposal soon so that it could be approved before the model code of conduct becomes operative ," said a source in Delhi.
The urgency of the Centre is on account of the fact that Congress wants to take credit for solving the long pending demand of the refugees. It will give it not only political credit in the State but would also project the party as sensitive to the demands of the refugees as the party had made a person a Prime Minister who himself was a refugee.
The urgency has been compounded by the fact that Cong MLAs and MLCs have been raising the issue of settlement of refugees in the Assembly and Council. The State Cong leadership is also pressing for early settlement not only because of the problem is long pending but also because it would give much political leverage to party which hopes to emerge as the single largest party.
The Cong leadership has also taken very critical view of the Chief Minister in this regard and is going to write to him about it very soon. The Centre has also communicated to him earlier also that when the matter has been discussed at the level of Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi it need merit and can't be delayed.
"When the PM and Sonia Gandhi had assured the Cong delegation about it, and when the Centre is to fund it, there is no reason for Omar Abdullah not to send the proposal. The party high command has taken a critical and very strong view of this attitude of the Omar Abdullah," said a Congress Minister.
According to sources, Omar is likely to give in to this demand of the party as he doesn't want to antagonize the Cong ahead of the election as his political career hangs on this alliance and he had shown how much he is willing to concede when he agreed to all recommendations of the 73rd Amendment.
