The three day meet will kick-start from March 8 and buyers from almost 30 countries have confirmed their participation in the meet to be held at SKICC here. Addressing a press conference here this afternoon, Sheikh Ashiq Ahmad, President Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCC&I) said the international buyer-seller meet has become an annual feature in Kashmir over the past five years now. Ashiq said that the meet brings sellers in direct contact with buyers from across the globe. "Seventy five buyers from 28 countries have already confirmed their participation in the buyer-seller meet. We are dedicating this year's international buyer-seller meet to the artisans and weavers who over the years played an important in preserving the traditional arts and crafts of Kashmir," said President KCC&I. Ashiq said that events like the buyer-seller meet help in disseminating the information that Kashmir is a safe place for holding international events. He said while the first international buyer-seller meet witnessed participation of 10 buyers the number increased with the passage of time. He exuded confidence that time will come when hundreds of buyers would take part in such a meet. "As on date we are not in a position to host more than 75 buyers. If that would not have been the case then hundreds of buyers could have been invited for the buyer-seller meet. We at KCC&I wish and aspire that 500 buyers take part in an international buyer-seller meet with participation from across the globe," said KCC&I President. Ashiq said that majority of the exhibitors at the international buyer-seller meet would be the members of KCC&I. He said the chamber would welcome artisans and master craftsman if they wish to be the part of the international buyer-seller meet. He added that the results of the previous buyer-seller meets have been encouraging for the overall business community of Kashmir. Sharing his views former President KCC&I, Abdul Hamid Punjabi said that buyer-seller meet should be viewed as a meet between the buyer and seller. He said financial transactions should not be linked with such an activity and that such events build a long lasting relationship between the seller and the prospective buyers. President Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Owners Federation (KHAROF) G M Dug said that live demonstration of various products would be carried out during the buyer-seller meet. He said traditional products like carpets would be on display during the meet. Dug said that state government should look into the aspect of scarcity of raw material for various crafts in the Kashmir valley. Former KCC&I President, Rauf A Punjabi said that buyer-seller meet provides a chance to the seller to come in direct contact with the buyer without pleading for the sale of his product. Punjabi said that past experience has amply proved that buyer-seller meet helped the buyer to place orders with the sellers so that they get a quality product once they are back from attending the meet.
