Creating 2008-like situation in Jammu
Dogra heritage under threat
3/6/2014 12:02:35 AM
Rustam
JAMMU, Mar 5: Are there elements in and outside the establishment who are creating in Jammu province a 2008-like situation by undermining the invaluable Dogra heritage? Will the proud Dogras allow such communal elements to destroy the Dogra history, culture and invaluable heritage? The answer is both yes and no. Yes, because there are regressive elements who are outraging the sensitivities of the Dogras by trying to undermine the significance of their historical sites, as, for example, Bahu Fort area and areas surrounding this historical, cultural and religious site not only of the Dogras but even the non-Muslims across the country, especially West Bengal.
It has come to the notice of the people of Jammu that the Bahu Fort area, which is a symbol of Dogra identity, has been mentioned as "Shahbad Colony" on a stone plaque installed at the site. It was noticed during the recent laying of the foundation stone of a ropeway project by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The word 'Bahu' finds its mention in the revenue records of the area and no revenue record mentions such colony as Shahbad Colony. It is obvious that certain elements have played a major mischief which could create a volcanic situation in Jammu province. The people have already started showing their mistrust in the establishment. Infact, while the association of lawyers, Bar association Jammu, struck the work today to register its protest again those who fiddled with the Dogra heritage, the VHP has not only accused the communal elements of changing the names of symbols of Hindu civilization, culture and religion like Shankracharya and Hari Parbat in Kashmir and Bahu Fort area in Jammu but also warned the authorities that things would go out of hand if remedial measures are not immediately taken to assuage the hurt feelings of the minority community (in this case non-Muslims). This would not be tolerated by the people of Jammu, both the BAJ and the VHP had said on Tuesday.
Besides, the BAJ and the VHP, the BJP has also taken up this issue in a big way. As a matter of fact, during the past three days, the BJP activists held three demonstrations against those who tinkered with the Dogra heritage and demanded action against those who changed the name of Bahu Fort area to Shahbad Colony.
The authorities would do well to take corrective measures to avert the impending disaster. Such an action on their part has become all the more imperative considering what the Kashmiri leadership witnessed in Jammu between June and August 2008.
