| Manjit questions discrimination against Jats | | Demands backward class status for community | | Early Times Report
Vijaypur, Mar 5 : Launching an attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for ignoring refugee issues, former Minister and senior Congress leader Manjit Singh today alleged that J&K Government deliberately avoided recommending Jat community for backward class status even as they are socially, economically and educationally and politcally most backward from other communities in the border State. In a statement, Manjit said that the UPA Government has given reservation to Jats as backward classes in nine states of India, while J&K failed to get same status for the community which has a population of nearly 6 lakhs from Poonch to Kathua districts of Jammu division, in 18 constituencies of J&K. Singh, who was annoyed with indifference towards the community, said that it was the same Omar Government which has yet not sent the package for one time settlement of refugees to the Central Government despite assurance of getting the package. "They have deliberately delaying the process of one time settlement of the refugees, who faced three wars between India and Pakistan and still putting up along the border areas which usually become hostile place for the two nations," Singh said. He further said that the unfortunate Jat whose members belong to even Muslims, Hindus and Sikh communities were left to the mercy of God and no step was taken for their upliftment. "Atleast Omar Government could have recommended this community for backward class status so that they could be reserved in central jobs and educational institutions," he said. He further said that these people go to neighbouring state of Punjab and work there to earn their livelihood in view of lack of job scopes. |
