| First violation of Model Code of Conduct comes up in Srinagar | | Congress leader all set to sponsor cultural programme | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Mar 7: Hardly two days within the announcement of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by Election Commission of India for the Lok Sabha elections slated to be held from April 7 a glaring violation has come up in this regard in the summer capital of the state. A huge billboard has come up on the New Airport Road at Rambagh area in which it has been written that a cultural programme titled "GINDBAASH 2014" is going to be held at University of Kashmir on March 15. There is no harm in organizing such a cultural programme but there is a different dimension to the entire story. Kadfeen Chaudhary, who claims to be a senior Congress leader, is one of the sponsors of the programme that is being held at the Convocation Complex, University of Kashmir, highest seat of learning in the Kashmir valley. The sponsoring of the programme by a politician is now allowed more so when the MCC is in effect. The MCC announced by Election Commission of India restrains politicians from carrying out activities that are likely to influence the voters in view of the forthcoming Parliamentary elections. Since the Congress leader is one of the sponsors of the programme there are chances that some of the prospective voters may get influenced by him and vote for the candidate supported by Kadfeen. The billboard carries a photograph of Kadfeen with the slogan 'Kattar Soch Nahi Yuva Josh' written below. On top of the slogan it has been written that the senior Congress leader is one of the co-sponsors of the cultural programme. The slogan written on the billboard is being projected by the Congress party as one of the pre-poll plans aimed at popularizing Rahul Gandhi, Vice President, All India Congress Committee. "Politicians seldom sponsor a cultural programme and such a thing cannot be thought of once the MCC is in vogue. The Congress leader is following the foot-steps of the politicians who lure the prospective voters at the time of elections. He may get in touch with the young voters and promise them sky if they vote for the Congress party candidate or the candidate supported by the party," said a group of voters while sharing their views with Early Times. The voters said that the violation carried out by the Congress leader should have come in the notice of Election authorities of District Srinagar since the billboard has come up on a strategic location in the summer capital. They don't rule out the possibility of a 'tacit' understanding between the two sides reached out to give benefit to the Congress leader and the party above all. "Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Shah who is also the District Election Officer should take immediate note of the violation. Stern action should be taken so that MCC is implemented in letter and spirit. Action at this point of time give confidence to people that everybody is same before law irrespective of his standing in the society, state or country. Otherwise, people would be forced to think that there is a lot of difference between rhetoric and real action," said the voters. |
