| Speakers highlight role, potential of women | | WDC celebrates International Women's Day | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 8: As part of International Women's Day celebration, the Women Development Corporation organised a grand function at Govt college for women, Parade, which witnessed an overwhelming participation. Aimed at highlighting the issues relating to women besides showing solidarity with the women in distress, the programme also focussed on discussing challenges to women empowerment. Secretary Social Welfare Department, M.S.Rather, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Complimenting the Corporation for holding the event, the Secretary expressed hope that such occasions provide us an opportunity to introspect and further our policies and programmes towards women emancipation. He said that the corporation is playing a vital role in improving the living standard of women fraternity especially rural through a chain of its Self Help Groups (SHGs). He added that formation of these groups has greatly helped the women to become self-dependent and live a dignified life. He exhorted upon the women to ensure their participation in decision making which is pre-requisite for the society to flourish to its fullest. "There is a dire need of identifying and recognizing the potential of women so that it could be utilized for the good of their community" he maintained. He said that it is a matter of great satisfaction that now the role of women has increased manifold in steering the society towards a better world to live in. Speaking on the occasion, Managing Director, Nahida Soz, extolled that the new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not treated equally to that of their male counterparts and still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, she added. Nahida Soz elucidated the aims and activities of the Corporation towards women emancipation. She informed that WDC has initiated various measures to upgrade the design development skills in women which will help them produce highly designed products as per latest market trends in days to come. She added that it is the prime concern of the Corporation to enhance women accessibility to credit for consumption and production through easy loan facilities. She said that this institution has strong grass root presence which gives deep insight into women concerns and encourages them participate in the world. On the occasion, the WDC displayed stalls exhibiting the products prepared by the beneficiaries besides SHG members and college students presented cultural programme. Later, the Secretary SWD along with other dignitaries released brochure of the Corporation. The dignitaries also distributed awards among the beneficiaries of the Corporation for timely loan repayment and best product under UNDP besides giving away prizes to participants of the cultural programme. Among others present were Principal GDC, Hemla Agarwal, Nasreen Khan, Beena Handa, Ruksana, Seema and other dignitaries. |
