Electoral rallies mark World Women's Day
3/8/2014 11:29:53 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 8: The world women's day was celebrated across district Reasi at various venues. Special rallies were organised by volunteers and women groups with appeal for celebrating the World Women’s Day 2014 as electoral participation day and to commit for greater participation in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in the district.
District administration has also launched a special signature campaign for women voters which was launched last week and reached household level today after series of training sessions.
The special drive launched for enrolment of women voters and ensuring their greater participation was necessitated due to low turnout of women in last elections.
In 2008 Assembly elections the Gender Gap in electoral turnout was 3% which was increased to 20% in the Lok Sabha elections. In hilly areas and urban centres the gender gap was even more than 30% as women participation witnessed a decline. Keeping this in mind the district administration launched a series of mass contact programmes aimed at greater participation of women in elections.
A massive rally was launched in Mahore which crossed the town area with placards of electoral participation and value of vote and raising slogans for women empowerment through stronger democracy. Similar rallies were organised at Arnas and Reasi. More than 3000 women and volunteers from various organisations participated in these rallies and vowed to participate in strengthening democracy.
Addl Deputy Commissioner Rajinder Singh Tara termed at as an historic event that such larger number of women turned up for electoral rallies and committed to strengthening democracy. He informed that SVEEP programme Jashn-e-Jamhuriat has reached new heights under the guidance of District Election Officer and a series of mass contact programmes have been organised which will continue henceforth. He added that SVEEP campaign has a two pronged strategy for filling the gender gap by creating greater awareness and ensuing their enrolment as well as greater participation. Rafiq Ahmed Jaral and Pritam Lal Thapa organised the rallies and signature campaign at village level which will continue till March 20th. District Election Officer launched this massive drive earlier this week.
