| Political reservation, minority status for KPs need of the hour: JTC | | | SK Kaw
Jammu, Mar 8: Highlighting the various issues pertaining to Kashmiri Pandit Community, the community leaders have demanded the minority status and political reservation for Kashmiri Pandit migrants and termed it as the need of the hour. This was stated by the community leader during a meeting of Jagti Tenement Committee (JTC) held here at Kashmiri Migrant Township, Jagti today under the presidentship of Shadi Lal Pandita, president JTC. Demanding the minority status and political reservation for Kashmiri Pandit migrants Pandita said that need of the hour was to grant minority status and political reservation to the exiled community and to create one extra constituency from each district of the valley besides three Parliamentary constituencies for KPs to represent them in state assembly as well as parliament. "This will not only give KPs political stability but also provide them chance to send their own elected representatives to state legislature and parliament,' he added. "Kashmiri Pandits could be able to elect their representatives with the exercise of their franchise, otherwise their votes go waste and does not serve any purposes during elections," he said and added that govt must consider the demand of KPs at earliest. Speakers during meeting he appealed to government, "Since the Pandits are in minority in state and they should be granted minority status like other states of the country for safeguarding their rights and simultaneously giving political reservation to the community will pave way to their permanent rehabilitation and the benefits for which they otherwise were being deprived of and ignored." Lambasting at the government for providing a meager relief to relief holders he said that the prices of essential commodities have gone sky high but our government seems to be ignorant of it. "An amount of Rs 1650/- per soul per month as cash assistance beside some kgs of rice and wheat is not sufficient for the relief holders, they lamented and urged government to enhance the cash assistance to Rs 4000/- per soul per month besides sufficient quantity of ration with an immediate effect and ensure the supply of ration at stores in the camp in time. |
