| Yousuf Bhat to fight LS polls as independent from Srinagar, may spill beans about Haji Yousuf's mysterious death | | Trouble for National Conference as senior party man resigns from Ganderbal | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Mar 31: National Conference more so it's working President and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah faced yet another embarrassing situation as one of the senior party workers from Ganderbal being represented by Omar today resigned from the party and decided to fight the forthcoming Parliamentary elections from Srinagar-Budgam seat as an independent candidate. Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, a key witness to the death of another National Conference worker Haji Yousuf today decided to part ways with National Conference. Yousuf has decided to fight Lok Sabha elections against National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah at a time when the party is already up against a revolt from one of its seasoned campaigners Ghulam Ahmad Saloora. Sources told Early Times that Yousuf threatened to spill the beans about the controversy surrounding the death of Haji Yousuf. He also accused the National Conference of rigging the 1987 elections and even went to the extent of saying that Dr. Abdullah was losing from Ganderbal elections but was declared winner after the party resorted to large scale rigging. "When Haji Yousuf was killed I maintained silence after being coerced by other party workers who said that this would bring disrepute to the party. My party leaders and workers assured that the reasons behind the killing of Haji Yousuf would be looked into. However, as on date there has been no progress on this issue, I have decided to call it a day from National Conference," said sources while quoting Yousuf. Sources while quoting Yousuf said that Haji Yousuf received money from party workers and activists on the directions of high command. He said once the things went awry he (Haji Yousuf) was made a sacrificial lamb ultimately resulting into his death. He added that Haji Yousuf was tortured mentally by the party leaders and nobody listened to him. "Both Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah should remain indebted to me since I saved the party at the time of utmost crisis. Omar's chair could be saved only after I maintained silence on the issue, but today they have forgotten all that. I am fed up with these people and as such I am no more a part of National Conference," said sources while quoting Yousuf. Yousuf has put the entire blame of the mess in Kashmir on the shoulders of National Conference leaders like Dr. Abdullah and Omar. He said that National Conference is responsible for the unending miseries of people of Kashmir. He averred that the senior party leaders and activists are being neglected in the party and they are not being given their due share. It would be in place to mention here that National Conference worker Haji Yousuf died in mysterious circumstances during the intervening night of September 29 and 30 after being summoned by Omar at his residence. Yousuf's family members alleged that he died due to the torture meted out by National Conference leaders and the personal security staff of Omar. However, police and State Government maintained that he died due to cardiac arrest. Opposition People’s Democratic Party also blamed the State Government for Yousuf's mysterious death. Following the incident the State Government ordered for the attachment of DySP Shabir Ahmad, Personal Security Officer, Chief Minister. Shabir was also sent to the Kulgam district as a DySP. The resignation of Mohammad Yousuf Bhat is being seen as a big jolt after Ghulam Ahmad Saloora's resignation from the party. Since then Saloora has come up with his own party namely Awami Insaaf Party. He and Bhat are likely to eat into the vote base of National Conference in the Ganderbal constituency being represented by Omar Abdullah in the State Assembly. Political observers believe that this may cast a shadow on the fortunes of Dr. Farooq Abdullah who is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Central Kashmir seat. The party is already in dock following the controversy surrounding Social Welfare Minister, Sakina Itoo who in a video can be seen asking an elderly to cast elections for party candidate from Anantnag Lok Sabha seat by raising religious sentiments. The party is also in news for wrong reasons after it served Wazwaan being ferried in police vehicles to its workers and leaders at a party meeting here recently. |
