Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 31: Allies of ruling coalition National Conference and Congress may well be seen riding on a 'collaborative' wave while jointly moving on a campaign trial for two Parliamentary seats of Jammu, the sailing is not smooth at all in Kashmir valley on this front. Congress is facing a stiff resistance from its workers across the Valley in garnering support for National Conference and they are seen in a defiant mode to work for the NC candidates . The bitterness is being attributed to the indifference shown by NC all through to Congress workers during the past over five years which has made the rank and file of Congress in Kashmir valley quite angry with the NC and prompting them to keep distance at a time when their support is crucial to its candidates.
Sources said even though J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz is trying to downplay the sharp differences between workers of National Conference and Congress in Kashmir valley, the issue turned embarrassing for the state chief on Sunday when even key functionaries and even a Kashmir based Minister openly supported what was seen as 'rebellion' expressed unequivocally by the cadres in a meeting against National Conference and its candidates for three seats of Valley. The unanimous expression and contention was that they would not seek support nor garner votes in favour of the NC, notwithstanding the fact that it would amount to defying party line and strategy of poll alliance. The workers and some leaders are now paying NC in the same coin which they faced for years while NC in power corridors conducted itself in a stiff manner in not honouring the aspirations of Congress workers of Kashmir valley.
Sources said in the meeting called by Prof Soz at Broadway Hotel last evening witnessed heated arguments and open opposition by majority of the functionaries who said workers on the ground level were not at all ready to garner support for NC candidates. It was conveyed to Prof Soz that workers who matter in certain key constituencies have turned defiant for the reason that it were same candidates when most of time they turned blind eye and even refused to acknowledge their political affiliations with their own ally Congress, how could they work for garnering votes for them ....Sources said most of the leaders in the meeting contended that it was difficult for them to work for those who behaved all through like strangers and even at times scoffed at them contemptuously and that it was unfair on part of the NC also to expect their help when they need it most. Sources also added that while Taj Mohi-ud-Din tried to play safe in pacifying the angry lot, one of Ministers supported the feeling of the workers as quite genuine and based on some reason.
As the heated arguments continued giving a tough time to PCC chief in pacifying them, sources said many workers left the meeting on angry note. However, the PCC chief later tried to explain the compulsion of following the line of extending support to NC for three seats of Kashmir as the party was helping the party in Jammu.
