Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 31: In a major blow and an embarrassing situation for the separatist Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a close relative of a senior secessionist leader is among the four important entrants who have joined Mehbooba Mufti's Peoples Democratic Party here last week.
Aga Syed Hussain of Hassanabad Rainawari joined the PDP alongwith activist Bari Andrabi, journalist Tahir Sayeed and one-time associate of the Peoples Conference founder Abdul Gani Lone, Deen Mohammad Cheetah. Before working for different mainstream parties, lastly the BJP, Cheetah operated as a counter-insurgent in early 1990s.
Aga Syed Hussain is the real nephew of the prominent Hurriyat leader and Mirwaiz colleage Aga Syed Hassan Budgami whose brother Aga Syed Mohsin is a Congress leader and contested Assembly election against National Conference's Dr Farooq Abdullah from Hazratbal in 2008. Aga Hassan's nephew and son-in-law Aga Syed Ruhullah has been the National Conference MLA from Budgam continuously since 2002. He also functioned as a cabinet Minister in Omar Abdullah's government for over three years.
Aga Ruhullah's father and Aga Hassan's brother, late Aga Syed Mehdi, worked as a Congress leader for several years and contested elections on Congress ticket before he was killed in an IEB blast near Magam on Srinagar-Gulmarg Road in 2001.
Aga Hassan's another nephew and Aga Syed Mohammad Hussain's elder brother Aga Syed Abid attends Hurriyat's meetings in absence of the Shia cleric-politician. Significantly, another of Aga Hassan's close relative Aga Syed Mehmood is also a senior PDP leader. He was twice NC's MLA and Minister, first from Pattan in 1987-89 and later from Beerwah in 1996-2002.
Some unconfirmed reports said that even Aga Hassan's son, Aga Mujtaba, was "seriously interested" in contesting Assembly elections and contributing to the mainstream politics. He has been reportedly in touch with some pro-Indian political parties.
Once ardent supporters of Kashmir's separation from India, journalists Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra and Khalid Jihangir have also joined the mainstream political parties recently. Parra, who worked as Ram Jethmalani-led Kashmir Committee member alongwith journalist MJ Akbar and was known to be staunch supporter of hardline separatists like Syed Salahuddin and Syed Ali Shah Geelani for years, has also joined the PDP and appointed as the head of its youth wing. Jihangir, also known for his secessionist leanings and association to then separatist leader Sajjad Lone for several years, has joined the BJP at Narendra Modi's election rally in Hiranagar, Jammu, on March 26.
