| Kashmir highway remains open, two-way traffic from today | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 31: The national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, remained open for one-way as authorities allowed traffic from Srinagar to Jammu today. However, two-way traffic for light passenger vehicles, will be allowed from tomorrow on the highway, for the first time since December last year. Meanwhile, dozens of far-flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC), remained cut off from their respective district headquarters due to accumulation of heavy snow. A traffic police official said that hundreds of vehicles left different parts of the Kashmir valley for Jammu this morning. However, no vehicle was allowed from Jammu to Srinagar. He said from tomorrow light passenger vehicles will be allowed from both sides on the highway. However, till further orders heavy vehicles will continue to ply alternatively from Jammu and Srinagar. Official sources, however, said that the highway is damaged at several places, particularly in Penthal, Digdol and Banihal, making vehicular movement difficult. Meanwhile, dozens of villages, particularly near LoC in Keran and Karnah remained cut off from their district headquarters due to snowfall. Peoples Conference chairman Sajjad Gani Lone alleged that this is for the first time in several decades that roads to these villages remained closed. He alleged that he believes that snow clearance operation was not being taken seriously by the government so that members of opposition contesting parliamentary polls could no go there for campaigning. Mr Lone said instead of putting into service snow clearance machine, labourers are clearing the snow manually which will take more than a month. |
