| Students forced to study under open skies | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BARAMULLA, Mar 31: Last year on January 24 Government Higher Secondary School Baramulla for Boys was gutted in fire, in which a major portion of the building caught fire and changed into black rocks in no time.
Fourteen months later, school has not been repaired yet.
The repairing work has hit the 1500 students enrolled in the school. These students are braving harsh weather conditions due to which these students are taking their classes under open sky and in make shift arrangements.
Mohammad Assadullah Wani an academician of the district said, "Town has not only lost a precious asset but the glorious heritage of the district. Irony is the school building is just at a walking difference away from the district development commissioner's office Baramulla, and authorities have not tightened their noose so far."
Manzoor Ahmad Wani parent of a student said that nobody seems to be concerned about the students whose career is at stake, as they cannot take regular classes, but have to go in different shifts which irritate them psychologically as well as physically.
"I am very much worried about my child who has to appear in the board examination this year. If the same process of class shift arrangements happens throughout the year, then how he can concentrate on his studies, just to pass the examination is not everything," said Wani.
A student on the condition of anonymity said that school authorities are not bothered because their children are studying in private schools. The students said that the authorities are not ready to pay any heed to their academic and co-curricular activities since they have nothing at stake.
When contacted principal GBHSS Baramulla Mehraj-Ud-Din Fafoo said, " I joined last year in the month of September and I have done everything I could. I visited the concerned authorities several times and the estimation for reconstruction work is Rs 50-60 lakhs of the gutted building."
The Principal said that due to the paucity of accommodation classes are being shifted to laboratory and sports block and sometimes in the open ground, which mostly remains submerged in water during rainy season.
He said that his work is only to intimate the higher authorities adding that he is not the sanctioning authority. In the meantime the district administration authorities recently visited the school building and sanctioned four lakh rupees for roof furnishing. |
