However the department blamed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) for the mess and damage. According to reports, massive fire broke out due to short circuit during the preceding night at around 2:30am in the house of Ab Rasheed Bhat in Sherpora area of Anantnag town. Locals said the Fire and Emergency Service Department did not respond to phone calls. A local Mushtaq Ahmad said the people tried to douse the flames. Several people sustained injuries while fighting the fire. The house owners have been identified as Abdul Rasheed Bhat, Bashir Ahmad Wani and Mohmmad Shafi. Rashid's daughter who got married recently lost all her belongings. The residents of Sherpora and Danipowa Anantnag staged a protest demo against the alleged negligence of Fire and Emergency Services department and blocked Anantnag-Achabal road for many hours. They were demanding a through probe into the negligence showed by department. Deputy Director Fire and emergency services when contacted denied the allegations and blamed BSNL for the negligence. "It just happened due to the disruption in BSNL as the landline exchange of the cellular company was not working, even though we formally lodged a complaint with the department in the evening, our control room number got restored this morning so they might have ringed the control room number but due to problem in cellular network system we didn't receive any call at all." He said, adding they have obtained a certificate from the BSNL which itself establishes the fact that BSNL system in District Anantnag and Kulgam was not working and have submitted it in the office of Deputy commissioner. He said that once Srinagar control room informed our operator on his personnel phone, it took only five minutes to the department to reach on the spot. |
