| Has NC decided to become B-team of separatists? | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Apr 28: The election campaign of National Conference led by Dr. Farooq Abdullah has generated more heat than light. His statement that Kashmir would secede from India if India became a communal country has been nothing less than trying to fan separatist sentiments in the Valley. The controversial statement came just a day after two brave hearts of the country including a major and a sepoy of the army laid down their lives fighting militants who had killed a polling officer and injured five others when Anantnag Lok Sabha seat went to vote. BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has taken a serious exception to the statement made by a leader like Dr. Farooq Abdullah who is a Union Minister and has been Chief Minister of J&K three times. Ironically, Dr. Farooq Abdullah made this statement on a day 17 persons were wounded in Magam town where the NC was scheduled to hold an election rally. Statements like the one recently made by an otherwise responsible politician like Dr. Farooq Abdullah proves a very important point. The NC has not grown out of its traditional mindset to stoke regional and separatist sentiments whenever the party has to face the electorate. It is widely believed that by making such statements the NC is actually shrinking space for mainstream politics in the Valley where separatists have been asking people to boycott the elections and the militants have been targeting elected village representatives to create fear among the voters. It is a type of politically expedient statement that would in the long run have far reaching consequences from which even the NC would not remain immune. Mainstream political parties in the Valley in particular and the rest of the State in general are supposed to build bridges between J&K and the rest of the country. If the mainstream parties start batting as the B-teams of separatists who advocate secession of the State from India, then the space for mainstream parties would not only shrink further, but more seriously the distinction between separatist and mainstream politics would get obliterated. Whatever the compulsions for the NC patron to make statements like he has been making, acts like these are doing huge damage to the body politic of the country. Elections can be won or lost, but if these are fought on lines those lie outside the constitutional boundaries, the winners would only be the separatists no matter in whose favour the voters are polled. |
