| Kashmiri Pandits protest against non-inclusion of names in voter list | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 28 : Kashmiri Pandits today held a demonstration to express their resentment over not being able to vote in the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency as their names did not allegedly figure in the voters list.Activists of the Youth All India Kashmiri Samaj (YAIKS), led by its president R K Bhat, held a protest in front of the Jammu Election Commission office at Gandhi Nagar here. They shouted anti-EC slogans, alleging a "deliberate attempt" to deny Kashmiri Pandits (KPs) the voting right and demanded a probe into it. "We held the demonstration to show resentment and draw the attention of EC toward the non-inclusion of names of thousands of Kashmiri migrants in the voter lists for the Anantnag parliamentary constituency despite filling up of 'M Forms' by them well in time," Bhat told reporters. "This is disappointing on the part of ECI and Relief Commissioner Office Jammu who have failed in their obligation to protect the fundamental right to vote of the migrants." "It seems like a conspiracy by the authorities against the displaced community who are decisive voters in J&K as the Valley has shown less participation," he said. Addressing the demonstrators, Bhat claimed, "In Anantnag constituency, we have more than 32,000 voters in actual and the government accepted it had received 8,500 'M Forms' from migrants after proper scrutiny, but when we went to cast our vote we found our names missing from the voters list. "We also claim that the voter lists of migrants were not properly updated over the years and the names of many bonafide voters have been deleted from the lists," he added. "We have been deliberately deprived for this right. We also demand simplification of the procedure as this filling of 'M Form' in every election is cumbersome," he added. "There is no proper voter list prepared for people displaced from Kashmir. Their constituencies have not been properly defined. Parties never talk in this regard in their election manifesto," Bhat alleged. |
