Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 28 : Amid slogans, hundreds of lawyers in Jammu, took out a rally and intensified their strike demanding suspension of a police officer for allegedly manhandling one of their colleagues. Lawyers shouting anti-police slogans this noon took out a rally, which started from the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and culminated at Ambphalla, in the heart of the City.
The protesting lawyers were demanding suspension of the Station House Officer for allegedly manhandling a lawyer. However, the work in the district courts including the Jammu wing of Jammu and Kashmir High Court remained paralysed for the ninth consecutive day due to the ongoing strike.
"It is unfortunate that the senior police officers despite continue strike by the lawyers, has not taken any action against the cop for 'misbehaving' and 'thrashing' our colleague advocate in a full public view," a senior lawyer said. He alleged that one of the advocates namely Harshvardhan Gupta on April 16 was thrashed by the police officer (Station House Officer Gandhi Nagar) in Nanak Nagar area and was also kept in lock up for few hours, who was bailed out later. "We demand suspension of the cop followed by an independent enquiry comprising members of police department and judiciary," he added.
Various political, social organisations, besides NGOs, have also extended their support to the striking lawyers. Meanwhile, Congress MLC Ravinder Sharma appealed the adminstration to sort out the issue at the earliest in the best interest of the general publice adding that confrontation with legal fraternity should be avoided.
