| Exit polls force Congress, NC to review utility of alliance in J&K | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 14: Notwithstanding pre-poll alliance and the urge for sharing power for the last five and a half years fresh conflict has surfaced between the Congress and the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir. The exit polls seem to have forced the NC leadership and the senior leaders of the state unit of the Congress to review the ongoing alliance. Inside reports said that field reports suggesting that the Congress circles did not support the National Conference candidates in the three constituencies in the Kashmir valley and the NC supporters did not sincerely campaign in favour of the Congress candidates in the two constituencies in the Jammu region have been the root cause for the fresh conflict between the two sides. According to these reports, the two have never been sincere in supporting each other. The two had differed on NC's demand for greater autonomy and revocation of AFSPA. In January last the differences over the creation of new administrative units had touch a new high with Chief Minister having threatened to quit. As a result of these differences the plan is yet to be effectively implemented. Reports said that in case the Congress loses power in the centre the alliance between the state unit of the Congress and the National Conference may assume new dimensions. In case the BJP led NDA takes over in the centre under the Prime Ministership of Narendra Modi the centre may have no lick with the NC because its top leaders, especially Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, have repeatedly fulminated against Modi. However, senior Congress and NC leaders favour sustained alliance between the two because if either the NC or the Congress snaps ties it may prove disadvantageous for both the organizations. More damage can impact the NC than the Congress because Congress can forge an alliance with the PDP for forming the Government and for contesting the ensuing Assembly election. However, all depends on the poll results in Jammu and Kashmir. If the PDP wins all the three seats in the Kashmir valley the Congress may have no other alternative but to reframe its ties with the PDP. |
