SRINAGAR, May 14: At a time when thousands of people are being deprived of food grains in Kashmir a ration scam has surfaced in the summer capital of the state. The ration is being distributed on political lines with a legislator of National Conference backing the distribution.
Under the scam fake ration cards were issued in names of the wives of prospective voters and the store keeper was directed to provide ration without any fail in the Habba Kadal constituency.
Sources told Early Times that dozens of families living in the Habba Kadal constituency of Srinagar are illegally getting the monthly supply of ration despite the fact that they don't possess the ration cards. This thing got started before the holding of Parliamentary elections and the distribution of ration is going on.
"Months before the holding of elections for the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat the National Conference President asked the MLA Habba Kadal, Shamima Firdous to gear up the workers and ensure his victory. The MLA asked her workers to get the things done so that Dr. Abdullah wins from this Lok Sabha seat," said sources.
Sources said that the workers got in touch with the prospective voters, but there was a condition from the other side. The prospective voters asked the NC leaders and workers to provide them the benefits if they want them to vote for the NC President.
"The prospective voters were asked to get a note book with two photos of their spouses' pasted on the note book. The MLA concerned put her seal and signature on the book. Directions were issued to the store keeper to provide ration to the people who are in possession of the copies," said sources.
Sources said that fake ration cards were issued in favour of wives of the prospective voters since they are already in possession of the ration cards. There is no signature of the Director, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) department or any other official on the fake ration cards.
"This issue should have been reported to the office of Chief Electoral Officer, Jammu and Kashmir but it was not to be. We had heard for cash for votes scam in the past and this time around there has been ration for the votes scam. However, sadly no action was taken against MLA Habba Kadal and the NC workers who were part of this whole process," said sources.
Sources said that on the directions of MLA Habba Kadal ration is being provided to the beneficiaries on subsidized rates. The store keeper of the concerned ration depot was briefed about the whole plan of action and he is part of the 'dirty' game being played by the local legislator.
"It is quite obvious that since the store keeper has been asked to provide the ration the scandal must have also come in the notice of the CA&PD higher ups. However, up to this moment of time action is yet to be taken with the fake card holders who are continuing to get ration from the ration depot in the Habba Kadal constituency," said sources. |
