| Champion athlete gets a cold shoulder, empty recurring | | Beyond Police's hyped sports promotion! | | Sumit Sharma JAMMU, May 14: On the hind side of the sports events organized by Jammu and Kashmir Police under its Civic Action Program (CAP), which have proved to be little more than media opportunities for its bosses, the fact of the matter is that the organization has meted a raw deal to its own champion. Despite strong recommendations and remarkable performance over the years, a budding athlete has been deprived of his due. Undone and demoralized by apathy of the successive regimes and ignored for absorption as regular constable, love and passion for Athletics has motivated Special Police Officer (SPO) Ram Raj to give his best despite heavy odds and dismal lack of incentive. Despite several recommendations by highly placed officers and impressive haul of 37 medals, Ram Raj, presently posted in Traffic wing is waiting for regularization of his services so that he could sustain his family and carry on his training as well. "Talent alone doesn't steer you to success. You need enough resources to sustain your family and pursue your sporting career as well," Ram Raj who hails from BPL category, told 'Early Times.' In view of his outstanding performance, Ram Raj was recommended many a times for absorption as regular constable but to no avail. Then IGP Jammu Ashok Kumar Gupta, in its communique no Estt//2010/11496 to DGP wrote, "SPO Ram Raj being a good athlete, has participated in various sports events at National, Inter-state and Inter Zone Level and has represented JKP number of times. He also bagged four gold and four silver medals in athletics and has intimated that another SPO namely Tahir Ahmed of Armed wing who had bagged three gold medals during the year 2008 was promoted out of turn as Selection Grade Constable. Since SPO has proven his credential and can achieve much better for police department, therefore he needs to be absolved in Police Department on permanent basis". The same recommendations were also put forth by then IGP Jammu Dilbagh Singh (now ADGP). Meanwhile, in return PHQ in its communique No GB/ M-14/11/27768 to IGP Jammu said that the Police Establishment Board in its meeting held on May 25, 2012 required documents for absorption of SPO and the same were submitted accordingly, but the exercise too went in vain. "Despite many promises, I am not being regularized by the department and I am finding it hard to continue my Athletics and sustain my family," Ram Raj said. A senior police officers while taking a dig at the policies of the state Government said, "had he been a surrendered militant, he would have been absorbed in police department on permanent basis." |
