Agencies New Delhi, May 14: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi skipped the farewell dinner organised for outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, triggering speculations about the cause of his absence. The dinner was hosted by Rahul's mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to honour Singh, who had led two back-to-back governments of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the Centre. Even senior Congress leaders reportedly did not have any clue about Rahul's plans of skipping the event. "I have no idea," a Times Now tweet quoted Congress leader Salman Khurshid as saying. Kamal Nath, too, apparently was not informed about Rahul giving the dinner party a miss. "He wasn't there, I don't know," another Times Now tweet quoted him as saying. An ABP tweet quoted unidentified sources as saying that Rahul was not in the country. Congress sources said Rahul skipped the dinner as he was out of town, CNN-IBN reported. According to the TV channel, Congress leader RPN Singh said it would not be fair to politicise the issue. With the Lok Sabha poll results due on Friday and exit polls predicting a rout of the ruling Congress, the issue triggered a huge debate in the national media. |
