| Those enjoy dual citizenship hate the other Indians' presence in J&K | | Tarigami's dangerous line | | Neha JAMMU, June 5: Chairman of the Indian Constituent Assembly BR Ambedkar had in 1949 told the votary of "Switzerland-type independent Kashmir" Sheikh Abdullah that he did not consider his demand for a special status for Jammu and Kashmir rational and that his demand, if accepted, would cause harm to the national interest. He had said: "You want India and Indians to defend Kashmir. You want Kashmir and Kashmiris to exercise all rights all over India, but you not want Indians to exercise all rights in Kashmir. I am Law Minister of India and I cannot be a party to an act betrayal of national interest". Sadly, however, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, a fake secularist and bitter critic of Maharaja Hari Singh, joined hands with Sheikh Abdullah and made the Constituent Assembly adopt Article 370, though on a temporary basis. It happened on October 17, 1949. Ever since then the people of the state have been enjoying dual citizenship. They are citizens of the state as well as Indian nationals entitled to all rights across the country. They are doing business across the country and have acquired immovable property worth trillions and trillions of rupees. They are holding important positions in the country in almost all the departments. They have also invariably been part of the Union Council of Ministers. They, in fact, are enjoying a privileged position in the country. The kind of treatment the Kashmiris have been getting should have changed their attitude towards New Delhi and the countrymen, but it has not happened. On the contrary, they have exploited, and continue to exploit, the temporary Article to the hilt to create a wall of hatred between the Muslims of Kashmir and the rest of Indians. They have contempt both for India and the Indians and it can be seen from what has been happening in the Valley since decades now. They have cleared the Valley of all the Indians and converted this part of the country into a one-community region. So much so, they have expelled from the Valley the miniscule minority of Kashmiri Hindus and the process to cleanse it of the Sikh community is also on. Almost all those who are active in the Kashmir's religio-political arena consider the presence of Indians in the state in general and Kashmir in particular as unwanted and undesirable. It's not just Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik and other self-styled freedom fighters who hate and despise the Indians. The so-called mainstream Kashmiri leaders, including those who call themselves Leftist, also practice the similar politics of hatred. Just the other day, CPI-M state secretary and MLA from Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami shamelessly exhibited his hatred for the Indians and described the move to scrap Article 370 as an attempt at changing the demography of Kashmir. "New Delhi was raking up Article 370 issue to effect demographic changes in the state (read Kashmir). It is testing time for Indian federalism," he said, and added that the BJP and the RSS are also planning to trifurcate the state. He also made himself an object of contempt and ridicule when he said that Kashmir, like Jammu and Ladakh, has maintained a "pluralistic society" and the state cannot be bifurcated or trifurcated. He did not say a single word about the demographic scene of the Valley. He also did not say that the Indian Constitution contains a provision that allows creation of more states or bifurcation or trifurcation of the existing states. Tarigami did not stop just there. He further said that there was the need to grant more autonomy to the state. He put forth this divisive demand overlooking the fact that Jammu and Ladakh had just rejected the NC and the Congress and voted for a party that is bitterly opposed to Article 370. The problem with the Kashmiri leadership is that it is not prepared to come out of its watertight compartment; it's not prepared to appreciate the changes taking place in the country, in the world and even around them. They continue to live in a world of the past. This will not do. On the other hand, such an attitude will only anger the Indians outside Kashmir. They would do well to remember that nationalists have at a number of places attacked the Kashmiri Muslim students. They should also remember that a number of educational institutions have expelled Kashmiri Muslim students. It has happened because of the dangerous views the likes of Geelani and Tarigami air. Gone are the days when their writ ran in the Valley. Things have changed and will change further and in the larger national interest. |
