Jammu, June 21: Sensing that the PDP is on a strong wicket for the ensuing Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir a number of former bureaucrats (Babus) are reportedly showing an inclination to join the party with the purpose of entering into the Assembly after contesting the election on the PDP ticket. "The recent thumping victory of the PDP i.e. giving a drubbing to its rival National Conference (NC) by snatching all the three LokSabha seats in the Kashmir valley is believed to be a reason to have encouraged retired officers to join the party, sources said. They said as the date for the next Assembly election is drawing near many former bureaucrats are vying the candidature from political parties to seek their entry into the State politics post-retirement. Over the past few years, J&K has witnessed a trend of former government servants joining politics. On their side, the political parties have been more than open to welcome them into their fold even as some of them have a 'tainted' past. In a latest development the opposition PDP announced its first list of candidates for the Assembly polls. The party has picked up two former bureaucrats, Bashir Ahmad Rounyal and MehboobIqbal as their candidates for Banihal and Baderwah Assembly constituencies. Iqbal served at different positions in the State administration and his last place of posting was administrative head of the PHE/Irrigation and Flood Control department before he retired in 2011 and he joined PDP in December 2012. Meantime in a latest development sources said AR Kuchay, former Additional Secretary, is pushing for his candidature from the PDP for HabbaKadal constituency while former bureaucrat Farooq Ahmad Renzu, too is making all out attempts to get party ticket for the Eidgah Constituency. The PDP has already pocketed a number of former bureaucrats, including Swami Raj Sharma and NaeemAkhtar. Reports said that the Congress and the BJP too were trying to rope in former bureaucrats who could be given the party tickets for contesting the Assembly election. The ruling National Conference is no different to open it arms to former bureaucrats. Within 24 hours of his retirement, former Deputy Commissioner GanderbalShowkat Ahmad Mir joined the party and is now eyeing mandate from Tangmarg in north Kashmir. |
