| Amnesty package puts Omar in dock | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 21: The Chief Minister in his reply to Communist leader, Tarigami has mentioned that he wanted the Union Government to accept Nepal as an approved route for return of militants from Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PAK). Nepal is not an approved route and of late many families coming from the route have been taken into custody. The arrests along the Indo-Nepal border have pushed Omar to the wall as it has dealt a severe blow to the rehabilitation policy. The families of the militants who expect their wards to return from PAK safely are critical of the `failure' of the Omar led Government to smoothen the process. And with NC having lost the Parliamentary elections, Omar has little choice but the pursue the demand of Nepal as an approved route. The policy, however, has won Omar much criticism from pro-Indian quarters. According to them, the return of militants from PAK was not in the interests of the country. "It has put the NC Government in the dock. The Government has been saying that the persons shown in the disappeared list by voluntary organizations have crossed over to PAK. But nobody in the list of the disappeared has availed the benefits of the policy till date. "If disappeared persons (as claimed by the state Government are in Pakistan and PAK, they must avail the amnesty package and return," said a relative of a disappeared person. Omar has admitted yet another flaw in the amnesty package in his response to Tarigami. " The returnees find it very difficult to integrate with the society,' he said. |
