| HM officials ask KPs to bury differences | | Community members opposing return policy rebuked | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, June 21: Union Home Ministry has asked the Kashmiri Pandit organizations to bury their differences and come under a single platform. Kashmiri Pandits have always been asked to support the central Government's plan of permanent return of Pandits to the Valley. Sources told Early Times that directions were issued to the leaders of various organizations of Kashmiri Pandits during their meeting with Home Ministry officials on Friday. The Kashmiri Pandit leaders presented their view point in the meeting about New Delhi's proposal of bringing back the members of the community. "Some of the members of Kashmiri Pandit community opposed the central Government move of bringing back the Kashmiri Pandits. These people said that situation is not conducive for the return of community members to Valley and they should not be forced to fall in line with respect to their return," said sources. Sources said that a section of the Kashmiri Pandits supported the move of bringing back the members of community. These people said that the return of Kashmiri Pandits is on the cards as the situation has improved a lot across the Valley. There were others who were non-committal on the issue and did not share anything in support or against the move. "The Home Ministry officials made it clear to Kashmiri Pandit leaders that the central Government is serious in permanent return of community members to Kashmir valley. They said that instead of opposing the move the Kashmiri Pandits should support the move and play a fruitful role in this regard," said sources. Sources said that Home Ministry officials even rebuked the people who opposed the permanent return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley. Leaders of Kashmiri Pandit organizations were asked to bury their differences once for all so that there is a single platform where they can project their demands. "There are 24 Kashmiri Pandit organizations with some of them being active and the rest inactive. Representatives of majority of these organizations were present in the meeting and they were ordered not to oppose the central Government move for permanent return of Kashmiri Pandits," said sources. Sources said that leaders of some Kashmiri Pandit organizations have their base in Mumbai and other parts of country. These people are running their business while earning lakhs of rupees on monthly basis and seem to be in no hurry whatsoever in coming back to Kashmir valley. "Some of the Kashmiri Pandit leaders have been living outside Kashmir valley for more than four decades. These leaders opposed the Government plan for permanent return of Kashmiri Pandits. However, they were reprimand by the Home Ministry officials and as such had to eat a humble pie," said sources. It would be in place to mention here that Home Minister, Rajnath Singh asked Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah to identify 16,800 kanals (2100 acres) of land for the creation of three satellite cities for Kashmiri Pandits in Central, South and North Kashmir. The issue came up for discussion during the meeting between Singh and Omar at New Delhi on Friday. |
