| No threat to the Amarnath Yatra: Dgp | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 21: Ruling out any threat to the Amarnath Yatra Director General of J&K Police K Rajendra Saturday claimed the state police and other paramilitary forces have been deployed on the yatra track to ensure smooth conduct of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage beginning June 28 via Baltal route. Interacting with media persons DGP said adequate deployment of para military troops has been made from Lakhanpur to Baltal to ensure incident free Amarnath Yatra. He said the centre has provided us adequate forces to conduct the incident free yatra. He said the overall security situation in the state is improving and the level of infiltration has come down compared to previous year. Commenting on the possible threat from militant outfits K Rajendra elaborated even though there is no specific threat to the yatra from any militant organisation this year the security forces and the state police is leaving nothing to chance. He said we have beefed up our defences adequately to ensure smooth yatra. He said the entire yatra route has been sanitised and ground deployment of forces has been completed. Commenting on the over all security environment in the state DGP claimed by and large the security situation in the state is peaceful. He said during the last two days he reviewed the security situation along the borders and crime situation in the region and expressed satisfaction. Asserting that security forces in Jammu & Kashmir are alert to threats of al-Qaida, director general of police (DGP) K Rajindra Kumar said that the state police along with central forces are prepared to handle any situation and thwart nefarious designs of militants. "We are alert to threats and prepared to handle any sort of emergency situation effectively," Kumar said in reply to a query on threats issued by al-Qaida on Jammu & Kashmir. "I can assure all of you and people of the state of J&K, the police along with central forces are prepared to handle any sort of situation and thwart all such nefarious designs," the DGP told reporters. Top militants of al-Qaida's central command had purportedly released a video calling on Muslims of Kashmir to "join jihad". It is perhaps the first time that Kashmir has been specifically targeted. "The level of infiltration compared to last year has come down. This year around 10 militants managed to infiltrate. We have got a sound and effective anti-infiltration mechanism at the border. We have got a very sound intelligence system," the DGP said. When asked about the level of seriousness that the police attaches to such threats in the wake of attacks in Pakistan and Iraq, he said that, "Well in this situation, we would not like to comment. But I can assure you we are prepared to handle any sort of situation." Defence minister ArunJaitley had said on June 15 in Srinagar that Indian forces are capable of handling any threat of al-Qaida in Jammu & Kashmir. |
