J&K Govt making no efforts to repair highway from Chenani to Nashri
6/21/2014 10:42:28 PM
Jammu, June 21: Despite the fact that traffic movement on Jammu-Srinagar national highway is moving on the existing route through Patnitop but National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) as well as state government seems to have abandoned this prestigious highway. This step-motherly attitude towards Chenani to Nashri stretch of Jammu-Srinagar national highway is irking commuters who have to travel on this highway. Daily worst kind of traffic jams are witnessed on this portion and NHAI and state government is not waking up to the need of people. NHAI for time being started repair work but it has been left mid-way and only patch work has been done near Patnitop. "Right from Chenani to Nashri, condition of highway is so bad that it takes almost two hours in normal condition and if traffic jam is witnessed, it takes more than four to five hours. Authorities seem to be sleeping and traffic police is only looking for making the money and hardly cares about the traffic jams," said Akash Sharma, a driver, who moves up and down on this highway along tourists. In this part of the year the tourist season has started to pick up and as the AmarnathYatra will get underway in upcoming days the rush of vehicles on the highway will increase. These vehicles will have to move through stretch as well and if the situation doesn't improve, traffic chaos on the highway will be much more. The lethargic attitude of NHAI and state government is a result of construction of Chenani-Nashri tunnel, which will by-pass the highway and Patnitop will not be part of new highway. This project will take another two years to get complete but the NHAI and state government seems to have decided not to improve the condition of existing highway. It is the high time for people of Jammu to raise the voice against government so that attention is being paid to improve the condition of road.
