| Soaring airfares denting Kashmir tourism | | CM not bothered | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 27:Persistently soaring airfares to Kashmir from different cities of the country are discouraging tourists from visiting Kashmir, thereby seriously denting the tourism industry of the state, but the state government has shown little inclination in taking up the issue with the airlines or the Union Ministry for Civil Aviation. Right from the January this year the airline companies hiked the airfares for the flights operating on Srinagar sector from Delhi , Mumabi , Bangalore etc. From the month of April the airfares were increased once again with Delhi- Srinagar flight costing Rs.13,000 to Rs 16,000 .The DG Airports Authority (AAI) of India has also shown its reluctance towards addressing this issue. Pertinently a Srinagar based NGO J&K Peoples Forum had filed a complaint before the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) few months back and the SHRC had sent a notice to the DG AAI , who in its reply had categorically shown its reluctance for any relief. Pertinent to mention that flights going from Delhi to Switzerland and Dubai are charging far less as compared to Delhi Srinagar flights .The rate for Geneva flight from Delhi ranges between Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 from June 26th to July 1st week and similarly the Dubai based flights costs between Rs Rs 14,000 to Rs 17000 only. The renowned airline companies such as Oman Air and Qatar Airways charge just in between Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 for the New Delhi - Abu Dhabi sectors. The anomaly in airfares is discouraging tourists to fly to Kashmir and encouraging them to consider a holiday overseas. As the airfares are hiked by the airline companies, the Government is least bothered to address this issue. Recently Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi , but he did not raise the airfare issue with him . This important issue hasn't been taken up by the J&K Government with the concerned Ministry Civil Aviation Ministry which indicates indifference on part of the state government.
