| Luxury buses duping innocent passengers | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 27: With Amaranth pilgrimage and ongoing summer vacation inducing heavy rush, owners of luxury buses which operate illegally between Delhi-Jammu-Katra and Chandigarh-Jammu-Katra are duping innocent passengers by charging them according to their whims and fancy and the RTO has assumed a dubious silence over the gross illegality going on under his nose. Sources in the RTO divulge that most of these luxury buses which bear registration numbers of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and even Nagaland and have no permits to operate on the said routes. "These buses operate only through a nexus between operators, Traffic police and Transport authorities," said an employee of the Transport Department pleading anonymity. While these buses an necessary permission and documents to operate, they fleece hapless passengers who fail to get train reservations by overcharging them at will. "They charge anything between six to fifteen hundred per head against dubious receipts and the booty is then divided between the Traffic police and the Transport authorities for conniving in several illegalities in the entire operation," a source averred. Interestingly, all these illegally operating luxury buses are parked in the yard near RTO office in Jammu during the day before they set out for their next illegal journey late in the evening. Meanwhile, people who frequently travel on these luxury buses rue the nexus of the Transport officials and Traffic police with these operators. "The RTO has the mandate to stop the illegal operation of these buses but it suits the vested interests to turn a blind eye," said Ramesh Raj, an employee in a private company who has to travel between Jammu and Chandigarh twice a week. "Since these buses operate illegally, they cannot fix their tariff and that gives the violators the latitude to charge at will," he added. |
