As supporters of Farooq, Omar fight it out, NC loses 'credibility' among masses
Chaos, confusion over distribution of mandates for Assembly polls

SRINAGAR, June 27: National Conference, the oldest mainstream political party of the state is going through a critical phase these days as there is a virtual split among the workers of the party.
While the old workers are in favour of Dr. Farooq Abdullah being projected as Chief Ministerial candidate of the party a sizeable lot among the younger generation vouches for projecting Omar Abdullah as the CM candidate of the party. This clash of interests among the workers has virtually brought the older lot at loggerheads with the young lot of the party workers.
Sources told Early Times that Dr. Abdullah recently told Omar to manage the show himself since he has lost interest in managing the affairs of the party. The NC President is yet to come to terms after his humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha elections at the hands of Tariq Hameed Qarra from the Srinagar-Budgam Parliamentary seat.
"The basic NC workers are at a loss these days since the party affairs are not being managed in the right manner. The people who offered everything for the party are not being considered for the prime positions. On the other hand people having business interests with some of the leaders are enjoying prime positions in the party hierarchy," said sources.
Sources said that senior party workers wanted Dr. Abdullah to take over the command as the Assembly elections are being held after few months. These people are of the opinion that Omar has miserably failed as Chief Minister of the State and the failure has brought disrepute to the overall image of National Conference.
"Dr. Abdullah was very much interested to take over the reins but after losing the Parliamentary elections he somehow lost the interest. The matters also became worse when the former MP Dr. Mehboob Beigh washed the dirty linen in the public thus further maligning the image of the party," said sources.
Sources said that Dr. Beigh's utterances gave a chance to Omar to settle scores with his father who is currently the President of the party. Omar did not waste any time in criticizing Dr. Abdullah and said that people like Dr. Beigh should be taught a lesson by the party once for all. He said leaders like Dr. Beigh should be trimmed to size so that there is no further indiscipline in the party.
"Both Omar and Dr. Abdullah have failed over the past five or six years. While Omar failed to govern the state in good manner, Dr. Abdullah despite being a Union Minister failed to achieve anything for the state. There was no relief for the people from Omar and his father as such feet of both are trembling on the shaking ground," said sources.
Sources said that there is complete confusion and chaos as far as the distribution of mandate for the Assembly elections is concerned. There is a mad race going on between the probable candidates with majority of the probables being rejected by the masses in the past.
