| Using Assembly as a tool to get 'Azadi' for J&K | | 2014 elections | | Neha
JAMMU, July 4: India is a democratic country. People across the country elect their government every five years and people in the states elect new assemblies also every five years. In Jammu & Kashmir, elections to the assembly are held after six years. It has been happening since 1977. Everything is done as per the constitutional requirements. Elections are fought on democratic and economic issues and those who contest election take a solemn pledge that they - apart from working for the welfare of the people without fear or favour - shall maintain the unity and integrity of India as well as sanctity of the constitution. This is true of all those who contest the Lok Sabha elections, as also true of those who contest the assembly elections. But here is a state called Jammu & Kashmir where parties like the National Conference ruthessly violate the rule of law and pay little or no regard to the Indian Constitution as well as Jammu & Kashmir Constitution. Only last year, Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister had told a leading news channel that he was sticking to the chair because it helped him play a certain role which he could not if out of power. In other words, he said that he was misusing his position, the secretariat and the assembly to push forward his party's pernicious agenda. Everyone is aware of his agenda, which is also his party's age-old agenda: Achieve for J&K semi-independence or a step short of complete independence from India. Like Omar Abdullah, there are many other elements in Kashmir, who endorse the Hurriyat's ideology but do not join the Hurriyat Conference as part of their grand strategy, saying they need an official instrument that they could use to achieve the goal being advocated by the Hurriyat Conference. "There is no doubt that Hurriyat people brought Kashmir political scenario in limelight and politicized the issue very well on international stage. But in the Hurriyat camp, we couldn't have served people better…But in the mainstream, we can save people from PSA (Public Security Act). We do not want to add pain and victim-hood to the people. We need proper institution before as well as after 'azadi'. (We are) working on self-sufficiency and Hurriyat is working for self-determination. The whole idea is we can only determine self when we are self-sufficient. There can be no self-determination until we are not self-sufficient. That is the reason we didn't join Hurriyat camp," they say. Each and every word they spoke is self-explanatory and everything is in public domain. Is it not time for the President of India, the constitutional head, and the Governor, the constitutional head of the state, to intervene and discharge their constitutional obligations towards the nation? Indeed, it is. |
